Chicago Locals: Twisted Scissors
Chicago Locals: Twisted Scissors
Twisted Scissors is located at 2007 North Point St, Chicago, IL 60647
Twisted Scissors is a hair salon tucked away near the corner of Logan Square and Bucktown. When I first moved to Chicago, my family and I lived not too far from Twisted Scissors. I would pass the salon on my way to take my son to the playground or to his piano lessons. The salon always seemed like a space you would go to get your hair done, have great conversations and get in a few laughs while you’re at it. It's always an entertaining experience sitting in a salon chair at Twisted Scissors.
Welcome back to the third installment of my photo-essay, The Chicago Locals. Over a few months, I interviewed and photographed people and small businesses in the Logan Square area; I’m pleased to share the result of that photo-essay with you.
We met with the founders of Twisted Scissors, Anna Gonzalez-Armes, Angela Bolos-Hartman and Amber Murphy-Huels, to discuss how they came to start the salon. Through our conversation with them, Anna shared the story of how she and the other founders came up with the idea to start the salon over drinks. I resonated with their experiences as women & business owners who moved into Logan Square to start their salon when at the time, Logan Square was a crime-ridden neighborhood.
Despite the challenges they faced when they opened their salon, 20 years later, the punk-chic-safe-space of a salon they dreamt up and built is still going strong. This independently owned salon honors the female experience- their slogan “It hurts to be beautiful” can be found painted around the salon.
Sit in the chair and soak up the knowledge these talented women have about the neighborhood.
Book an appointment, relax and vent- or don’t talk at all, you will leave Twisted Scissors all the more beautiful.
